As the Human Force prepares to send a team to Amanecer in January 2026, we spoke with architect and previous program participant Etienne Zambrano about his work bringing sustainable community spaces to life, and what volunteers can expect to experience firsthand!
Designing Change: Etienne Zambrano and the building of the new Kiosko at Amanecer
At just 26, Colombian architect Etienne Zambrano is transforming learning spaces for children in Amanecer — proving that architecture can be a tool for both community and environmental impact.
Etienne first joined Human Force in 2022, describing the experience as a “conscious engagement with the environment, surroundings, and human relationships.” That time inspired him to see the potential of design not just as structures, but as living spaces that nurture communities and connect people with nature.
“For me, community projects are essential for cultural flourishing. Spaces only gain meaning when they’re filled with life — interactions between humans, and with the surrounding natural environment,” Etienne reflects. “Integrating these elements respectfully — culturally, socially, and historically — is what gives a project its true value and sustainability.”
With professional skills in low-impact, ecosystem-focused design, Etienne is now leading the reconstruction of Amanecer’s community Kiosko. This multifunctional space will serve as a hub for EcoAventuras and the Amanecer Fundación, providing children with a vibrant place to learn, play, and explore nature. Beyond supporting EcoAventuras, the Kiosko will also host community gatherings and act as an incubator for future projects, including vocational training and other initiatives that benefit the wider community. Volunteers from Human Force will play a hands-on role in bringing this vision to life, contributing directly to its construction and impact.
“The Kiosko is more than a building — it’s a space for learning, community, and growth. Being part of its creation allows volunteers to leave a tangible mark on the lives of the children and families here,” Etienne says.
Looking to the future, Etienne hopes to continue developing sustainable infrastructure across Quindío, addressing educational, recreational, cultural, and medical needs in local communities. He plans to collaborate closely with leaders, like Virginia Thomas (SDIA’s executive director), who has always maintained a positive and prosperous perspective of communities.
For Etienne, the Human Force represents more than volunteer work — it’s an opportunity to combine professional expertise with community service, creating projects that are sustainable, meaningful, and alive with human and natural interaction.
“We may think we have no knowledge to share, but there are many ways to offer support. Sometimes, passion allows us to go further than our ability, and in community, everything is empowered,” he says.
Like Etienne, Human Force volunteers can leave a lasting mark — shaping spaces, lives, and communities while learning, growing, and connecting.
